Student health insurance

In Italy, the national healthcare system is provided by a public healthcare service (ASL). Only foreign citizens with a valid stay card or residence permit may apply for the service.

EU students are required to have the European Health Insurance Card (form E111 or E128) if already effective or similar private insurance policy with international validity to benefit from a health service cover. To find out more, before leaving to Italy, contact your national social security office or its local branches. Be aware that none of the forms replaces a normal travel insurance. It only relates to necessary care at a first aid station (following an accident, for example) or on-going care for a serious medical condition.

Non-EU students in order to get the VISA/Residence permit non-EU students must show evidence of a certified health insurance cover (it is recommended to have a copy certified by the Italian Consulate or Embassy). You can purchase the Italian National Health Insurance before arrival if you are unable to find in your own country an insurance with coverage valid abroad. Contact Accademia di Italiano if you wish to enrol in the Italian insurance. The certificate costs EUR 69.00 for 6 months or EUR 118.00 for 1 year.
